Unveiling the Mystery Wood: A Woodturner's Journey with a Hollow Form
As I share with you my latest woodturning project:
I'm eager to hear your thoughts on this enigmatic piece. This once-turned hollow form or large bowl, crafted from the intriguing MysteryWood, has left me pondering its final form. As you can see in the photo, the shape at the top is still unsure of itself – I'm toying with the idea of trimming it down for a more defined silhouette.
The woodturning process for this piece presented its unique set of challenges. Working with mystery wood always keeps me on my toes, as its unpredictable grain patterns and hardness can make each cut an adventure. From carefully mounting the wood on the lathe to cautiously making the initial cuts, every step required attention to detail to unlock the wood's hidden beauty. Yet, it's these very challenges that make the journey so rewarding.
Now, the piece will undergo a period of patience – a few weeks of drying time – followed by the meticulous sanding process. This stage will reveal more of the wood's character, and I'm excited (and a bit apprehensive) to see how it will all come together. Will the drying process accentuate the beautiful patterns I've glimpsed so far? Only time will tell.
For both my fellow woodturning enthusiasts and those who appreciate the art of handcrafted wooden pieces, I invite you to share your thoughts: What do you think of the current shape? Should I trim the top for a more streamlined look, or let its uniqueness shine through?
