Embracing Nature's Design: A Stunning Apple Wood Live-Edge Bowl
There's a special place in the world of woodturning for pieces that celebrate the raw, untamed beauty of the tree. This apple wood bowl is a prime example, showcasing a captivating live edge that runs along its undulating rim. It's a piece that feels as if it was discovered, rather than entirely crafted.

The most prominent feature is undoubtedly the preserved bark edge, a testament to embracing the wood\'s natural form. This dark, rough texture creates a striking contrast with the smooth, inviting interior of the bowl. The apple wood itself displays a beautiful spectrum of warm, earthy tones, from a creamy blonde to richer, reddish-brown hues that swirl and blend through the captivating grain patterns.
The shape of the bowl is organically freeform, with a slightly asymmetrical rim that enhances its rustic appeal. It's this very naturalness that makes the piece so compelling, allowing the inherent characteristics of the apple wood to shine. The interior boasts a smooth, polished finish with a matte or satin sheen, highlighting the complex, flowing grain and the subtle variations in color.
Techniques Used
I used a once-turned technique to take it from a wet bowl blank to a finished bowl with 1/4" thick walls. I let it dry for about a month and was lucky to not have it crack at all. It was finished with several coats of Sutherland Welles Polymerized Tung Oil. This bowl embodies a truly organic aesthetic, perfect for adding a touch of rustic charm or bohemian flair to any space. It’s a piece that tells a story of the tree and the deliberate craft involved in bringing its natural beauty to light.
