In the Home

This apple wood bowl has the kind of character that immediately tells you it came from a real tree, not a perfect board. The bark inclusion runs through the piece like a natural fault line, giving the bowl a visual center and a little tension.

At 10 inches wide and only 3 inches tall, it has a low, table-friendly profile. It can sit on a dining table, sideboard, kitchen island, entry console, or shelf without feeling bulky. The warm apple color keeps it inviting, while the inclusion makes it feel one of a kind.

The Wood and Form

Apple is one of my favorite domestic woods because it often has more personality than its size suggests. The grain can be warm and dense, with reddish-brown transitions, subtle figure, and occasional surprises hidden in the blank.

This piece had a much bigger surprise: a bark inclusion that nearly caused the bowl to fracture down the middle. Instead of having to toss this into the firepit, I stabilized it with CA glue and let it remain part of the finished bowl. That rescue became the story of the piece.

Design & Finish

The form is low and open, which gives the inclusion room to be seen without making the bowl feel fragile or overworked. A taller shape would have made the defect feel more structural. A lower bowl lets it read as character.

The finish is Sutherland Welles polymerized tung oil. It warms the apple without making it glossy or plastic-looking, and it keeps the surface feeling natural. That matters here because the appeal is the contrast between a refined turned surface and the rawer, stabilized feature running through it.

Why This One Stands Out

This is one of those pieces that could easily have failed. The inclusion was not decorative in the beginning; it was a risk of the piece flying apart on the lathe. The satisfying part was turning that risk into the reason the bowl works.

That makes it a good fit for someone who likes handmade objects with visible history: not flawless in the factory sense, but carefully stabilized, finished, and allowed to keep the evidence of where it came from.

Commission Notes

This bowl is currently available through Finder’s Keepers Corner. A similar piece could be commissioned if you like apple wood, natural inclusions, or bowls where the unusual parts of the tree remain visible.

Good commission directions for this style would be:

  • a low apple wood bowl for a table, shelf, or entry console
  • a handmade gift bowl with visible natural character
  • a piece that preserves a bark inclusion, void, or other unusual feature
  • a warm-toned bowl with a food-safe natural oil finish
